Updating

The Surfmeter Lab extension is now part of Automator. There is only one program to update. You can find the available versions in the dashboard, under Clients > Software Downloads.

Native Installation

Updates have no automatic rollback

An update replaces the installed version. If the new version causes problems, Automator does not restore the previous version automatically.

To update by hand, run:

surfmeter update --check # Only check if there is a new version
surfmeter update # Update, asking first in a terminal
surfmeter update --yes # Update without asking

This downloads the new version from your Surfmeter server, verifies it, installs the browser it needs, and replaces the old version. It never installs an older version.

To update on a schedule, set updates.automator.schedule in the schedule config. In the dashboard, this is under Global Settings, in the Updates card. For example, this updates every Sunday at 03:00:

{
"version": 2,
"updates": {
"automator": {
"schedule": "0 3 * * 0"
}
}
}

Without this setting, the probe does not update itself.

You can also install a new version by unpacking its archive and running its setup.sh, which keeps the registration and the configuration.

Docker Installation

The image contains Automator and its dependencies. To update, pull a new image. The command surfmeter update does not work in a container.

Updating the Browser

Each version of Automator comes with a matching browser version, which surfmeter update installs for you. To check or repair the browser, run:

surfmeter browser list # Show the installed browser
surfmeter browser install --force # Install it again

Updating the Configuration

The configuration updates by itself. To update it now, run:

surfmeter config update
